"What I did was establish my credentials as an expert in my field - child development and parenting - by writing textbooks before turning to the trade market," she says. "It is imperative, before a person writes a book, to be especially qualified to write about that subject. This means doing the background work."
Malinda says she approached book promotion like she does everything else in life - "by learning as much as possible about the process." She studied the top self-publishing how-to books on the market, as well as a half-dozen books about the marketing of books and "attended Book Expo in order to interview distributors and make contacts."
The most important thing she's done was to "hire an award-winning company to do her interior design, cover design, brochure, logo, stationary and website. "I also found a top notch printer," she says. "Finally, I hired a PR firm to send out press releases about the new book. I am in the process of sending out 200 pre-release books to reviewers across the country."
Malinda's latest and fourth book is Your Kids, Their Lives: A Parent's Guide to Raising Happy, Competent, Caring Children (Pink Roses Publishing 2006).
