WHO: Marathon Farm
The BUZZ: Marathon Farm, a 501c3 was formed earlier this year to support a 15,000 square-foot urban garden with the intent of growing organic produce to be sold at an affordable farm stand on site with a portion dedicated for purchase at fair market value by Marathon Restaurants in Center City Philadelphia. In a few short months a blighted inner-city land parcel was turned into green blossoming farm land with produce grown on raised flat beds and sold at the Farm stand.
Over the summer local youth participated in the programs offered at Marathon Farm including many students from the Vaux High School
Twenty plots were designated for neighbors that wanted to participate in their own community gardens. Funds raised at the Family Fall Fair will help continue these programs, expand plantings at the Farm and teach Do-It-Yourself urban gardening in Philadelphia in backyards, roofs, vacant lots and even fire escapes!
